What Does Agape' Mean?

Agape' (ah-GAH-pay). Self-giving love that is not merited. In the first century, the Greek language contained several different words for Love. Eros expressed the sexual aspects of love between a man and a woman. Philia was the most common word, and suggested affection for a friends and relatives, which was often expressed through acts of hospitality and concern.

The Greeks also had another word for love: Agape'. But, generally, that word was colorless and weak with no fixed meaning. Before the New Testament was written, Agape' was not often used as a noun. For example, the verb form appears commonly enough in the Septuagint, but the noun is used only 16 times. But when the NT writers adopted Agape', they infused it with stunning new meaning. In the NT, Agape' is the word that has been chosen to express both the love of God and the love that knowing God infuses into human relationships.

At times, Eros has been defined as love generated by passion, Philia as love generated by natural affection or liking, and Agape' as love generated by the will. It seems best however to define Agape' differently: This is love as God himself has expressed it in Christ. We understand such love only when we see in God's commitment to a lost humanity, a commitment so deep that "He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we love God, but that he loved us and sent his son as an astonishing sacrifice for our sins" (1Jn. 4:9,10).

When we define Agape’ by God's act in Christ, we realize that it is completely self-less. It keeps on caring despite the flaws in others; it acts for the benefit of the loved one, even when an act of love costs the lover everything.

The most striking aspect of the NT's teaching on agape' is that God creates the capacity for this kind of love in each believer. John says, "We love God because he (God) first loved us." (1Jn.4:19). This new capacity for love is to find expression in everything we do. "Be imitators of God," Eph. 5:1 says, "as dearly loved children, and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us." We now can model our relationships with others on God's relationship with us, and can choose to love them as he has loved us.

While Christ himself is the ultimate definition of Agape', the Bible also gives us other descriptions of the life of love that Jesus' followers are called to live. Perhaps the most beautiful description is found in 1 Cor. 13: 4-7:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves.

If we lead this kind of life, we will come to know agape' not just as a theological concept, but as a reality---and through us others will begin to sense the indescribable love of God. This is why we choose to name our church "Agape".

Agape'! Our Vision, Mission & Plans for the Future.

Our Church Vision

"Empowering Families, Inspiring Community Unity, and Enabling an Atmosphere of Spiritual Freedom and Perfect Praise"

The Church's Message For the Masses:

"Vision is the source and hope of life. The greatest gift ever given to mankind is not the gift of sight, but the gift of vision. Sight is the function of the eyes; vision is the function of the heart."

Munroe, Myles. (2003). The Principles and Power of Vision. Keys to Achieving Personal and Corporate Destiny. Nassau, Bahamas: 236, 11.

Three Scriptures our Church is Founded on and Why:

Habakkuk 2:3 - 2nd Corinthians 3:17 - Jeremiah 31:3

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie; though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

Responding to the Vision in its Appointed Time; Hearing it Speak and Not Lie:

Leadership is born out of guiding vision and passion to accomplish a noble task, and to inspire others to develop and release their potential, it derives its fulfillment from the success of others.

Munroe, Myles. (2003). The Principles and Power of Vision.

The Vision of

The Agape' Community Christian Church...

"Empowering Families, Inspiring Community Unity and to Enabling an Atmosphere of Spiritual Freedom & Perfect Praise."

*2nd Cor: 3-17

Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.

Where God’s Spirit Rain, there is Freedom!

We need to understand that we were all called to freedom, only we are not called to misuse our freedom. Don't give an opportunity for the flesh, but through love we are to always serve one another. Galatians 5:13

John 4:24

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and truth.

What Does Our Vision Mean?

Empowering Families:

Families are faced with many troubling issues today, such as problems with communication, high divorce rate and teen pregnancy and the increased level of school dropout rate and alcoholism, truly in these sad days and times that, if left without more optimistic options, the moral structure of family unity would be lost. The word of God deals affectively with restoring family unity and healing the moral fabric of the family structure. The Agape Community Christian Church (ACCC) believes in family restoration and healing. Our goal is to strengthen the weaknesses and restore whatever is lacking with in the family by using the word of God to not just improve but to also empower families to obtain the wholeness that they so desperately need.

Inspiring Community Unity:

It is the firm belief of The ACCC that the Church should not live or exist apart from the community. In-fact, the church should be the heartbeat of almost any and every neighborhood. That is why a great deal of our services, projects and social events are geared towards positively affecting our social surroundings. That's why our Choir, Fund raising projects and our outreach services are open to the public. The listed below services are also open and free to the public.

Food Pantry * Free Breakfast with the Neighborhood * Christmas Community Programs * Summer & Spring Programs & Thanks Giving Dinners * Other "Out Reach" Missions *

And last but not least, Our Family & Friends Day Program & our Annual Church Anniversariesserves as a conduit between church and Community youth and families in an effort to take part in celebrating the unique togetherness of God, families and community.

Enabling an Atmosphere of Spiritual Freedom & Perfect Praise:

While we know that there isn't a possible way to have prefect praise; nevertheless, we won’t let that stop us from trying to reach that level. Our goal is to be as Christ like as possible, to show Jesus from the time you enter our church sanctuary and from the time you exit our church doors. The Agape Community Christian Church (ACCC) is not your typical orthodox Christian church setting; on the contrary, we are quite untraditional in our praise and worship; for example, we have t-shirts that represent our choir robs; moreover, we don't require membership to take part in our choir practices and most of our church songs are made up. It is our heartwarming desire to create such a freedom of praise that it doesn't always have to be maintained with the same orthodox structure and traditions of past Christ centered establishments. As long as the spirit of God is alive and well, it creates a sense of wellbeing and brings with it-its own freedom.

*"Jeremiah 31:3 "

With love and kindness have I drawn thee."

We are all Members of One Body, under One God and with One Glorified Hope and that is to be More like Christ Jesus, in every aspect of our lives, to live in the presence of God and to reach and teach others to do the same.

John 17:23

I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.

What we want for our Church Members.

Our plans for our Church Members?

To be delivered from the bondage of lack & poverty.

(By teaching basic Godly tithing principals.)

To live victoriously in and through God's word.

(By teaching biblical principles of God's word.)

To encourage God's people to live up to their full potential and to pursue their dreams and goals.

(By offering self-help/net-working resources.)

To break the curses and negative and dysfunctional mind sets that seek to continue to keep God's people in bondage.

(By teaching effective prayer & faith building bible lessons, aimed - if applied- at life building and social developmental problem solving for individuals, youth and families.)

Our Goals:

To use the word of God to improve the lives of people by teaching, preaching and being a pattern of good works for all, that God, our heavenly Father, may be glorified now and forever.

What Do We Believe?

We believe in One God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and all things visible and invisible:

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; Begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made:

Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnated by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried: And the third day He rose according to the scriptures: And ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And He shall came again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end.

We also believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the prophets:

We also believe in one catholic (Meaning ancient undivided Christian church of that time) and apostolic church: We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins: And we look for the resurrection of the dead: And the life of the world to come.......

"Praise is What We Do!"

Our songs will not be found on the radio or on a CD, yet; nevertheless, they're all made up, coming straight from the heart, filled with praise, love, and devotion. However, we are open for someone to take us on as a special project for a recording.

Why Visit us?

Why consider us for your Church home- more importantly, if you do not have a church home?
